- Go to the Metadata > Classification section, on the Classifications tab
- Click on the Add button
- In the Standard field, select BISAC (priority)
- Select one or more categories, depending on the content of the publication
- Click Save
You can select other standards and add other categories. However, the BISAC standard is required by most retailers.
A few tips on BISAC classifications
- It is required to provide at least one BISAC category. We recommend that you provide three.
- Always select the most specific BISAC categories possible.
- Avoid categories that are too general, such as Fiction / General, since they would prevent resellers from correctly identifying the domain of your publication.
- Always stay within the same domains. In the case of a work of fiction for instance, only select categories that fall under Fiction. For a historical novel, select the Fiction / History category, not the standalone History category, as your book may end up in the category of Historical Essays.
- If you publish books for young people, select only categories that begin with Juvenile (up to 12 years old) or Young Adult (12 to 18 years old).
- If you add more than one classification, it is important to select the most relevant as Principal.
In the case of a publication intended for young people, i.e. having a BISAC Juvenile or Young Adult classification, it is mandatory to indicate the age limits in the Metadata > Audience section. If the book is not intended for young people, it is not mandatory to fill in the Metadata > Audience section.
